SUBURBAN TRAPPINGS

A troubled city girl proves a disruptive presence in a suburban neighbourhood when left to manage her brother's grow-op.

SANDRINE SMITH hates the suburbs but requires a high school diploma to fulfill her parole obligations and avoid prison and the only school that will take her is one in a bedroom community east of Toronto. And so she must live with her older brother, OLIVER SMITH, who operates a sophisticated illegal marijuana grow operation. While she takes advantage of the recreational benefits, the labour impedes her schoolwork. She enlists the aid of TREVOR WATSON, a neighbour and classmate whose overprotective mother, CARRIE WATSON, openly disapproves of the girl. Her situation deteriorates rapidly when Oliver has to go away, leaving her to run his grow-op.

Sandrine’s inability to deal with pests and other botanical challenges convinces her to risk involving her gardening expert neighbour, JACK BRIXTON. Jack is struggling to deal with an impending layoff and the sudden disappearance of his grief stricken wife, ALICIA BRIXTON. He is unaware that Sandrine’s presence—she is the same age as their daughter who died from a hit-and-run less than a year before—spooked Alicia. He is also unaware that Alicia is pregnant so he treats his wife’s absence casually, as she’s behaved in such a way before. His stoic indifference to his wife’s disappearance inspires another neighbour, ELENA BRADZINSKI, to persuade an uncertain and unstable Alicia to let her adopt the baby. Things erupt when Oliver returns to discover what his sister has done.
